How Old Am I in Cat Years?
Cats age dramatically faster than humans in their first two years, then settle into a slower pace. This calculator uses the standard veterinary formula — not just a simple multiplier — to convert your age into cat years.

How Cats Age
The formula used by most veterinarians, and endorsed by the American Animal Hospital Association and American Association of Feline Practitioners, is based on the observable developmental and physiological milestones cats reach at each age:
- Year 1: A 1-year-old cat is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human — sexually mature, physically developed, but still adolescent in behavior
- Year 2: A 2-year-old cat is approximately a 24-year-old human — fully adult
- Each year after 2: Each additional cat year equals approximately 4 human years
So the formula is: Cat age in human years = 24 + (cat age − 2) × 4
Or in reverse, to find what cat age corresponds to a human age: Cat equivalent age = (human age − 24) / 4 + 2 (for ages above 24 human years)
Cat life stages
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, cats are classified into life stages as follows:
- Kitten: 0–6 months (0–10 human years equivalent)
- Junior: 7 months–2 years (10–24 human years)
- Prime: 3–6 years (28–40 human years)
- Mature: 7–10 years (44–56 human years)
- Senior: 11–14 years (60–72 human years)
- Geriatric: 15+ years (76+ human years)
💡 The oldest verified cat on record was Creme Puff of Austin, Texas, who lived to 38 years and 3 days — roughly equivalent to 168 human years using the standard formula.
